Yes we encourage it! Rehabilitation from a stroke or spinal cord injury or other neurological condition is a 24 hour process. You will continue the work at home so if you need assistance, your family member or caregiver will have received valuable coaching while attending the session.

The Bobath Concept is the most widely used approach in neuro-rehabilitation for the assessment and treatment of people with stroke, spinal cord injury and other neurological conditions. It involves skilled clinical reasoning and problem solving based on an understanding of motor control and neuroplasticity. We use this theoretical knowledge and expert movement analysis to base our treatment approach.

We offer physiotherapy assistants either as an adjunct to physiotherapy or as a progression once goals with your physiotherapist have been met and you are looking for support to maintain your level of function. This might be a strengthening program, a walking program or specific work on arm and hand function with lots of task practice.

In general, most treatment sessions last 1hr as this allows enough time to reassess at each session and work on specific goals for that treatment. Some clients require or prefer longer sessions and book for 90 min while others may only come for 30 min. Treatment rates are prorated.

While the majority of our treatment takes place in the clinic, we do offer home visits in some situations and this is determined on a case-to-case basis. Factors for us to consider are the location of your home and the time taken to drive there as well as the flexibility in our clinic schedule.

In most cases, yes! We can work together with another physiotherapist in the community or hospital, as long as we communicate with each other. Just let your hospital provider know that you want to get more physiotherapy during your stay, and make sure all the necessary paperwork is filled out.

The length of time you need to attend physiotherapy depends on your individual goals and the potential for change. There are many considerations when deciding the number of sessions required per week and include time commitment, activity, exercise tolerance and funding. Rehabilitation from stroke, spinal cord injury and other neurological conditions can take many months and progress may fluctuate. We will work with you to set meaningful goals and track your progress so that you can be successful.

We recommend loose fitting clothing so we can properly see and access the parts of your body that need to be treated. Some people wear shorts and T-shirts while others prefer loose sweat pants that can easily be rolled up.

We often refer our clients to registered massage therapists as the two disciplines complement each other well. Many of our clients have problems with shortened, tight and even painful muscles after a neurological lesion such as stroke or spinal cord injury and massage therapy is a very useful adjunct to our treatment approach. We offer in clinic massage therapy with Alexander Berger, RMT from Mon – Thurs in our Burlington clinic and Fri in our Oakville clinic. Yasmina Yu, RMT works in the oakville clinic on Tues and Thurs.

We ask you to fill out our consent and intake forms online prior to the assessment which includes a list of medications. Any medical reports you have is useful to bring as well as any mobility devices you use (walker, braces etc).

We have gathered many resources over the years and can provide you with information on specialized community exercise programs for people with physical impairments such as stroke and spinal cord injury. We can help facilitate referral to those programs in addition to other healthcare providers such as occupational therapists, orthotists, and speech language therapists.
